Let the little children come…
Children truly are a gift from God, and at Henderson Community Church, we cherish their presence among us. We remember the example of Jesus, who chided the disciples in Mark 10 for turning the children away. “Let the little children come to me; do not stop them; for it is to such of these that the kingdom of God belongs.” Then Jesus took the children in his arms and blessed them.
As valued part of our congregation, we seek to include children in worship, while also seeking to minister to them at their own level. Children participate in the singing and prayer time of worship, then are invited forward for a “children’s sermon” with Pastor Loren. Here they are led in a short object lesson, activity, or song based on the scripture for that Sunday.
After the children’s sermon from Pastor Loren, the children head upstairs for Children’s Church with our Christian Education director where they participate in singing, stories, crafts, and fun. Through the fall the children are following along with the lectionary each week along with the rest of the congregation. By learning from the same scripture as their parents in church, children and parents have an opportunity to discuss as a family the biblical lesson for that week.
Each year, the children perform two special programs, at Christmas and Easter. This year the children are looking forward to the Christmas program which will be performed Sunday, December 13th. The children will practice together for three weeks leading up to the event. In the spring, the children will participate in the Easter program on Easter Sunday March 27, 2016.
Along with the bible stories and Christian songs, the children are also taught the importance of serving
others. One example of this is in their sponsorship of Oscar, a 13 year old boy from South America, who the children of Henderson Community Church have sponsored since 2008.
There are other events throughout the year for children as well such as Vacation Bible School and fall festival. HCC also sponsors a kids lunch program during school break to meet the needs of children and families in the community.
