FOOD BANK

In 1985, Elsie Brown and Mary Reasoner started a food bank at Henderson Community Church.  Rev. Timothy Merrill helped and gave encouragement.  During the next 12 years many donated their time to the food bank.  Some of the dedicated people were Elsie & Joe Brown, Jake & Florence Baslee, Ruth & Buford Templeton, Mary Reasoner, Esther Clifford, Mary Mumford, Maxine Embery, Bobbie Hagel and Audrey Smith.  During these years food was received from a grocery store and a large amount was donated by the congregation.  Food was purchased at a discount from Food Bank of the Rockies.  Adams County Food Distribution Center donated bread sweets, etc. which was picked up the day of distribution.  The church food bank was closed during the summer months and accommodated only residents of the Henderson area.  As time passed many became unable to continue volunteering.

In 1997 Dale and Elsie Quillen offered to bring in the food for distribution.

The congregation continues to donate food.  Scout troops and Henderson Elementary School have food drives and donate the food to the church food bank.  Large quantities of food are received from the Adams County Food Distribution Center.  The Quillens work with another food distribution center for seniors called "The Lord's Pantry".  The excess from the Lord's Pantry is brought to the Henderson Church Food Bank.  The Henderson Food Bank is now open year-round on Thursday afternoon from 4 to 6 p.m.  The area has been extended to include Brighton and the surrounding area of Adams County, this includes all residents.  The requirements are: Name, address, phone number and the number of people in household.  The food bank will gadly open it's pantry to anyone in need of food.  The food bank is located at the church, on the corner of 120th and Oakland, Henderson, CO 80640.
